The Institute of Leadership and Management is the UK professional institute for first-line managers & team leaders. It promotes the development of management excellence and enhances individual professional recognition. The development of resources to support individual learning by organisations is fully supported by ILM.

ILM has worked with Clemorton Consultancy Ltd in the development of the Essential Management Skills Programme (EMSP), which it sees as a major new resource supporting the development of supervisory and management training.

ILM, The Institute of Leadership and Management, originated in the Midlands when, in 1947, a group of far-sighted foremen in West Bromwich realised the need to develop management skills for supervisors by establishing the 'Institute for Industrial Supervisors'. This became the ISM and then the ILM with 22,000 members and student members. The ILM aims to be foremost in the promotion of management excellence and development, and to enhance professional recognition of ISM members. Post nominal letters AInstLM, AMInstLM, MInstLM and FInstLM recognise management and supervisory experience and achievement. Management knowledge is regularly updated through the institute's journal Modern management. Membership services include workplace assistance, an information service, learning materials and discount purchases.

ILM traditional and vocational awards are now delivered by over 600 registered and accredited centres including in-house company facilities, training providers and colleges. It is the UK professional institute and awarding body that specialises in the needs of Front-Line Managers, Team Leaders and Supervisors.

ILM is accredited to Investors in People and holds ISO 9002 certification.
